Karate Club
Description
The UWO Karate Club offers a friendly, helpful, and safe environment to practice Karate under the guidance of highly experienced instructors. The club welcomes undergraduates and grad students alike, whether you are a beginner or an experienced Karateka. Uniforms are not required for training sessions.
The Karate Club is dedicated to promoting Shorin Ryu Karate, a traditional martial art developed on the island of Okinawa (today part of Japan). However, if you practice a different style of karate, we provide the space and encourage you to do so.
Our training sessions emphasize karate basics and physical conditioning. We practice kicks, strikes, blocks, and kata. You will have the opportunity to spar with partners, learn various techniques for self-defence, and train with traditional Okinawan weapons.

About the President
Hey, everybody! My name is Erika Senne, and I am returning as your Club President for this academic year. I’m looking forward to seeing familiar faces and welcoming new members to our Club! Our executive team has planned an exciting year ahead full of socials, seminars, tournaments, special training days and more!
I'm in my third year of Kinesiology with an Honours Specialization in Clinical Kinesiology and a Major in Rehabilitation Sciences. I've been practicing karate for eight years and used to be a competitive sparring athlete.
My team and I are here to help and want to hear from you. If you have any questions at all about the Club, please feel free to contact me at karateclub@groups.uwo.ca!
Past Events
• Seminars: The Karate Club invites guest instructors to lead special sessions, offering exciting lessons on a range of karate topics throughout the year. Past seminars include Nunchaku Weapon Lessons, Women’s Self-Defence Strategies, Kumite (Sparring) Lessons, and Tanbo Weapon Seminar.
• Club Socials: Throughout each semester, the UWO Karate Club gathers members and instructors for social events on and off campus. Past events have included End-of-Year Dinners, Movie Nights, Bowling, etc.
• Travels: The club organizes travel plans for team members to tournaments and seminars outside the greater London area. Past travel events include a trip to Toronto for U of T’s full-day inter-university karate seminar.
• Gradings: Gradings are held a few times each year at our affiliated dojo in London. It is thanks to these events that members of our club are able to progress through belt colours/levels, working their way up the ranks while learning more about karate.
• Christmas Banquet: Each year, Legacy Shorin-Ryu dojos from London, Windsor, Sarnia, and the surrounding areas come together to recognize members' achievements and socialize between clubs. A buffet dinner is provided while guests chat amongst themselves, awards are presented, and black belt presentations are made.
