Employer Responsibilities
During the internship, it is expected that employers will:
- Extend all job offers through the Experiential Learning Specialist/Assistant (see the Internship Hiring Process page for more).
- Confirm acceptance of job offers and terms of employment in writing to the student and to the institution.
- Honour all offers of employment.
- Provide accurate and complete information on job responsibilities, compensation, and benefits.
- Assign a mentor or advisor to assist the student to identify goals and clarify roles and responsibilities.
- Treat the student as an employee, and let their expectations be like those of their co-workers.
- Provide the student with relevant training and development opportunities.
- Monitor the student’s progress and provide formal/informal feedback on a timely basis to both the students and to the institution.
- Complete agreements required by the faculty and university and provide the Experiential Learning Specialist/Assistant with a copy of the employment contract.*
We also ask that employers work with the student to complete the following assignments, which are required for successful completion of the internship program (ARTHUM 3000A/B/Y / ARTHUM3001 A/B):
Student and Internship Partner Agreement
Defines and gives the details of the internship and outlines the student’s and internship supervisor’s responsibilities for the duration of the internship.
Internship Agreement
Explains the purpose of an internship and outlines the responsibilities of the student, the internship supervisor, and the Experiential Learning Specialist/Assistant.
Learning Outcomes Assessment
A short activity that the student must complete in consultation with their internship supervisor early in their internship. This activity helps the student establish goals for the internship, which will later help the student articulate their learning from the internship experience.
