Prof. Laura Misener (Principal Investigator), Post-Doctorate fellow, Dr. Nancy Quinn (PhD, 2020), and Erin Pearson (PhD Candidate, 2024) conducted fieldwork onsite the 2022 Commonwealth Games in August. The team's research took place at the main event sites in Birmingham, UK as well as additional event sites in Warwick and Coventry.
This project aims to examine how para sport, para sport athletes, and their support personnel are socially recognized throughout the XXI Commonwealth Games. For the research team, this included examining all aspects of the integrated sport event such as the overall accessibility and marketing of the event, to the experience of spectators, athletes, and volunteers. The potential outcomes from this research may include greater resource allocation, sustained commitment to the development of para sport, and accessible participation opportunities for people with disabilities in low resource nations, to ensure more robust social recognition of para sport at future Commonwealth Games.

Justin Robar (PhD Candidate, 2024) and his supervisor, Prof. Alison Doherty are engaged with a European-based project funded by the Erasmus+ program titled, "." The project aims to help mobilize the sport sector's motivation and ability to integrate the increasing numbers of newcomers into organized sport and society at large, without jeopardizing the integrity and ability of local sports clubs through the requirements that may exceed their resources and capabilities. As associate partners, Justin and Prof. Doherty are providing a Canadian comparison case, along with Australia, to the six European countries involved in the project. Key stakeholders in community sport clubs across Canada that are involved with newcomer-focused programming have been interviewed to gain an understanding of capacity, challenges, and willingness of these clubs to initiate, run, and maintain these kinds of programs. This research project aims to use the information to better leverage sport clubs in Europe and Canada to assist with the ongoing goal of the integration of newcomers.

In his article, Dr. Ross discusses the new Office of the Sport Integrity Commissioner (OSIC), aimed at providing athletes with a reporting structure capable and whether it is truly an independent body. He also shares the thoughts of leaders from AthletesCAN (indepedent association that represents national athletes in Canada) and Global Athlete (a world-wide athlete advocacy initiative) on the OSIC. Chad Van Dyk (MA, 2018) completed his bachelor's degree in Recreation and Sport Business at the University of Waterloo in 2014.
