Knowledge mobilization includes a broad range of activities that bring research knowledge users into shared spaces with researchers. These interactions are relationship-based and context-specific. Knowledge mobilization does not just refer to dissemination, but also engagement, participation and attention to impact.
Knowledge mobilization is deliberate, requiring resources and non-academic expertise. A knowledge mobilization plan will evolve as research results come in, as the social context shifts and as the needs of knowledge users change. Prioritizing knowledge mobilization principles within research:
- Ensures the right questions are asked at the right time.
- Increases access to—and use of—research knowledge.
- Helps identify and mitigate the research's potential negative impacts.
- Creates a measurable pathway towards research outcomes and future societal benefits.
- Increases awareness of the research topic, research program and personal profile.
