Guggenheim Fellowships - 2025
John Simon Guggenheim Foundation
The Foundation offers Fellowships to support the ongoing development of scholars and artists by assisting them to engage in research in any field of knowledge and creation in any of the arts, under the freest possible conditions and irrespective of race, color, or creed.
Guggenheim Fellowships are intended for individuals who have already demonstrated exceptional capacity for productive scholarship or exceptional creative ability in the arts. Guggenheim Fellowships are grants made for a minimum of six months and a maximum of twelve months. The purpose of the Guggenheim Fellowship program is to help provide Fellows with blocks of time to work with as much creative freedom as possible. No special conditions are attached to the grants and Fellows may spend their grant funds in any way necessary to their work. The value of each Fellowship varies, and approximately 175 are awarded each year.
Eligibility
The competition is open only to citizens and permanent residents of the United States and Canada.
Application Process
Most applications are from individual applicants, however, joint applications are accepted. Joint applicants usually conceive of a project together and work equally on a project. If they are awarded the Fellowship, both are named Fellows and share one award.
A final application will consist of the:
- A completed online application form (available in August 2024), including:
- Personal information;
- Names and contact information of 4 referees who are familiar with the applicant's work and career;
- List of professional memberships;
- Education;
- Supporting documents in PDF format:
- Career Narrative describing the applicant's accomplishments (3-4 pages)
- List of Work, which should reflect publications if the applicant is a scientist or scholar, exhibitions if an artist, performances if a performer, etc.
- Statement of Plans outlining the project to be undertaken during the fellowship period, written in the first person (3 pages max.)
- Samples of the Applicant's Work might be requested from individuals in the arts
- Letters from expert referees are submitted directly to the foundation.
