Laser Safety Awareness - Control Measures
Administrative and Engineering Control Measures:
Various mechanisms are in place for the safe operation, repair, maintenance and viewing of lasers. These are installed and maintained by certified laser safety personnel. Examples of administrative and engineering control measures include:- Protective Laser Housing
- Enclosed Laser Beam Path
- Protective Room Barriers and Curtains
- Warning Signs and Labels
- User Certification and Permits
Personal Protective Equipment:
Damage to eyes and skin can be avoided under direct or scattered laser beam exposures by wearing appropriate laser safety equipment. Laser safety eyewear will protect the eyes from exposure to a laser beam. Proper eyewear is required for Class 3B and 4 lasers. It is the laser user's responsibility to ensure that the appropriate laser safety eyewear is used for the specific laser system.
Skin can be protected by covering potentially exposed areas with gloves or clothing.
Posting Laser Warning Signs in Entryway:
Laser warning signs are posted outside the designated laser rooms/areas. Signs provide laser hazard information as well as contact information.
Examples:
Posted laser warning sign found outside a room containing Class 3B and 4 lasers.
When "LASER IN USE" light is ON, do not enter without permission and proper protective equipment provided by a certified laser safety person.
Conclusion:
This is the end of the Laser Safety Awareness module. Hopefully, you have learned about the potential health hazards related to lasers and you are able to recognize when it is appropriate to wear protective equipment when entering laser designated areas.
FINAL STEP: Print the Certificate of Completion, sign it and get the Laser Permit Holder to sign it as well. That person will want to keep a copy of your certificate for their records.
