MA Program Requirements

MA students will be required to take the following three courses:

i) WS 9550 Feminist Theory (half course) - This course will analyze feminist theoretical approaches providing students with an understanding of the fundamental questions at stake in each. We will consider epistemological perspectives as well as the intersections of feminist theories with other theoretical approaches such as queer theory and critical race theory.

ii) WS 9464 Feminist Methodologies (half course)  - This course will explore questions and contemporary issues that are central to research practice in the disparate disciplines that comprise feminist research.

iii) WS 9459 Professional Development (half course)- This course will focus on preparing you for success as a graduate student as well as providing you with practical skill for future careers; topics covered will include feminist pedagogy and TA skills, abstract writing, grant applications, conference presentations, submission of articles and chapters for publication.

Students have two options to complete the MA in GSWS:

i) Course-intensive: Four full graduate courses (or eight half courses) including the required courses, selected from the approved list of courses posted on the Women's Studies website. Students may enroll in courses not on the approved list with permission of the course Instructor and the Graduate Chair.

ii) Independent Research Project: Three full graduate courses (or six half courses) including the required courses, selected from the approved list of courses posted on the Women's Studies website. Students may enroll in courses not on the approved list with permission of the course Instructor and the Graduate Chair. Students will also complete an Independent Research Project (IRP), which is due at the beginning of August. A student choosing this option will register in coursework and complete an IRP to satisfy their degree requirements. Students will be required to indicate their area of interest to the Graduate Chair prior to enrolling in the IRP option in order to match them with a suitable supervisor.
