Phonological Analysis

Prerequisite(s): Anthropology 1027A/B or Linguistics 2288A/B.
Course Description:
Phonology studies the organization of the speech sounds and their patterned interactions. This course begins with a review of Phonetics, and covers such topics as Phonemic Analysis, Phonological Alternations, Distinctive Feature Theory, Phonological Processes, and Historical Phonology. We analyze phonological data from diverse languages, formalizing our analyses in a form of rules and considering how to evaluate different approaches.
Pedagogical Objectives
On successful completion of this course, students will be able to
- Effectively use the basic phonological terminology in data description and analysis
- Describe a phonological variation using the appropriate terminology
- Identify phonological patterns and propose their analysis
- Analyze phonological processes and variation within a given framework
- Evaluate existing proposals for phonological variation
- Compare phonological analyses for strengths and weaknesses
