Geology

What is Geology?

  • The study of Earth’s composition, characteristics (physical, chemical and biological), history, internal and external processes and evolution
  • An interdisciplinary field that bridges physics, chemistry, biology, geography, data science and other fields of scientific study
  • Study of the interconnections and interactions of the geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere and anthroposphere
  • An enormous range of applications from understanding the origin, development and future of our planet, exploration of natural resources, the history of life, long-range forecasting of climate change, groundwater management, soil development and management, and carbon capture, to the exploration of other planetary bodies.

What Will I Learn?

  • How minerals, rocks and other Earth materials are formed, their uses, and their significance to understanding how Earth operates
  • Connections between major features we observe on Earth’s surface (e.g. oceans, continents, mountains, etc.) and the internal processes responsible for their existence.
  • Study fossils and other evidence of ancient life to interpret Earth’s past, and to help predict future biological responses to changes in Earth’s conditions through time.
  • How to explore for and manage mineral and energy resources for our future.
  • How to study and manage groundwater sources to ensure safe water supplies for our communities
  • How methods used to study geologic materials on Earth can be applied to the exploration of other planetary bodies

Careers in Geology

  • Due to the already interdisciplinary nature of Geology, this broad field can be combined with degrees in other disciplines, including geography, biology, physics, chemistry, economics, law, and many others. Many of our students have also used a degree in Geology toward entry to professional schools (e.g., medical school, law school, business school)
  • The following career paths can be in industry, government, or academia
    • Sedimentologist/stratigrapher
    • Paleontologist
    • Geochemist
    • Hydrogeologist
    • Economic geologist
    • Petroleum geologist
    • Environmental geoscientist
    • Soil scientist
    • Planetary scientist
    • Volcanologist
    • Gemologist
    • Geoscience educator
