REPORT OF THE SENATE COMMITTEE ON UNIVERSITY PLANNING (SCUP)

FOR APPROVAL

1. Renaming the Department of Anaesthesia

Recommended:That, effective January 1, 2002, the Department of Anaesthesia in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry be renamed the "Department of Anesthesia & Perioperative Medicine."

Background:

The Department of Anaesthesia, the Joint Medical Advisory Committee (London Health Sciences Centre and St. Joseph's Health Care London), and the Council of the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry have approved the recommendation that the Department name be changed to "Department of Anesthesia & Perioperative Medicine". Reasons for the renaming are: (1) To properly define the Department's mission in the modern provision of perioperative anesthesia care, treatment of the critically ill and pain management, at the highest level of excellence through exemplary clinical practice, education and research; and (2) To reflect the current era in the structural and functional changes in health care delivery and practice of anesthesia.

[A proposal to amend the Constitution of the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry to reflect the new name will be channeled through the Operations/Agenda Committee to Senate, parallel with the proposal to rename the Department.]

2. Nabisco Professorship in Marketing

Recommended: That the Senate approve and recommend to the Board of Governors, through the Vice-Chancellor, the renaming of The Nabisco Brands Ltd. Professorship in Marketing to "Nabisco Professorship in Marketing" and other changes detailed in Appendix 1,at the request of Nabisco's parent company, Kraft Foods North America, Inc.

3. Oticon Professorship in Acoustic Signal Processing

Recommended: That Senate approve the establishment of the Oticon Professorship in Acoustic Signal Processing for a period of five years at the National Centre for Audiology, under the terms of reference shown in Appendix 2, based on a generous gift received from The Oticon Foundation in Denmark.

FOR INFORMATION

1. Brescia University College

The Principal of Brescia College has advised the University that Brescia's Council of Trustees wishes to change the name of the College to Brescia University College for reasons detailed in her letter to the President of the University dated November 5, 2001 (see Appendix 3).

The Board of Governors approved the following recommendation on November 22:

That the Board of Governors of the University advise the Principal and Council of Trustees of Brescia College that the University has no objection to the College adopting the name "Brescia University College" on the understanding that Brescia College/Brescia University College will not seek to acquire the power to grant degrees.

In May of 1999, the Board of Governors passed a similar motion indicating that the University had no objection to Huron College adopting the name "The University of Huron College". The then-Principal of Huron College advised that the College wished to adopt the name "University of Huron College" to distinguish itself from Ontario Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology. It was the view of the Huron College Board at that time that this change would raise the College's profile, particularly in the recruitment of students overseas and in its other international initiatives where potential students and organizations outside the Province of Ontario assume that Huron College does not hold university status. In the end, the name change that was granted was Huron University College which came into effect with the enactment of the Huron University College Act, 2000.

2. North Campus Building Siting and Design

As part of the SuperBuild Program, the Board of Governors approved the North Campus Building. In September 2001, the Property and Finance Committee of the Board appointed a Design Team for the facility. The facility is intended to provide a large number of General University classrooms, accommodation for Faculty of Information and Media Studies and Teaching Labs and Research Facilities for the Faculty of Science. The proposed square footage of the building is approximately 100,000 sq. ft. and is to be located on a site between the new Visual Arts Building and the Staging Building (Appendix 4) The facility will have four floors: the first floor will contain General University classrooms including a large 800-seat classroom; the second floor will accommodate the Faculty of Information and Media Studies (FIMS); the third floor will accommodate student Biology labs; and the fourth floor will house mechanical rooms and research labs (interior design shown on Appendix 5). The architect's rendering of the exterior design of the building is shown in Appendix 6.

The architectural drawings provide a conceptual layout and elevation view of the facility. The design will be fast- tracked insofar as possible in an attempt to open the building by September 2003. However, based on the availability of trades people in the London area, the project may not be completed until January 2004.

Nabisco Brands Ltd. Professorship in Marketing

In recognition of the importance to Canada of maintaining and improving the management of our economy, the University is proud to establish in perpetuity the Nabisco Brands Ltd. Professorship in Marketing.

The appointee will have specific expertise in marketing and will be an Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor at the Richard Ivey School of Business a full professor in the School of Business Administration at The University of 澳门六合彩开奖预测 Ontario. The responsibilities of the appointee will be to devote his or her energy in furthering research and teaching activities in marketing with specific emphasis on the Canadian context.

Appointments to The Nabisco Brands Ltd. Professorship for an initial period of up to five years, renewable, will be recommended by a Selection Committee constituted as follows:

The Dean of the Richard Ivey School of Business School of Business Administration who shall serve as the Chairman

The Associate Dean (Research) and the Associate Dean (Faculty Development) of the Richard Ivey School of Business.

Two members of the Faculty of the School of Business Administration selected by the Council of the School of Business Administration

Two representatives of the Canadian business community selected by the Council of the School of Business Administration

The Dean and the Professor shall provide a written report on the progress and advancement of the Professor's work each year. The "Nabisco Professorship in Marketing" will be mentioned in all publications and public activities relating to the Professor's work.

Background:

The Nabisco Brands Ltd. Professorship in Marketing was established in 1985. The donor has asked that: the name of the Professorship be modified; that individuals at the ranks of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor be eligible for appointment to the Professorship; and that the composition of the selection committee be revised to be consistent with selection committees for other Chairs, Professorships and Faculty Fellowships.

Funding for this Professorship is drawn from the income on an endowment of $500,000 provided to the University by Nabisco Brands Ltd. in annual amounts of $100,000 beginning September 1985. The company reviews the funding of the Professorship periodically to determine whether any augmentation of the capital amount is appropriate. Funding of the Professorship is in the form of augmented faculty support. For example, the funds can be used to support the professor's salary, cover expenses such as secretarial support, and/or support expenses associated with the professor's research.

Oticon Professorship in Acoustic Signal Processing

Donor and Funding: Funding for the Professorship will be provided by a generous donation of $400,000 to be received in equal installments over five years from The Oticon Foundation, at the end of which time the Professorship will terminate. Funding will be used to provide salary support for the holder of the Professorship.

Additional gifts of $50,000 and $55,000 will be received over five years from The Oticon Foundation for travel and laboratory equipment respectively in support of the Professorship.

Under University policy, an amount equal to 5% of the total cash gift will be applied to support fundraising, donor management and stewardship costs. When the levy is taken into consideration, the amount available for spending for the Professorship is $76,000.

Effective Date: December 1, 2001
Appointment: An appointment to the Professorship will be made by the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences and the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering Science. The holder of the Professorship will have a distinguished record of research and teaching in digital signal processing, audiological instrumentation and speech processing.

The selected candidate will be appointed to an academic position at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor within the Faculty of Health Sciences and hold a cross appointment within the Faculty of Engineering Science.

The appointment will be for five years, following which the Professorship will terminate.

Criteria: The role of the Professor will be to build a leading-edge program of signal processing research that bridges the disciplines of audiology, speech science, electrical engineering and biomedical engineering in order to address the needs of hearing impaired individuals. The holder of the Professorship will work in collaboration with members of the National Centre for Audiology to develop standardized measures of single microphone, directional and FM-based hearing aid noise reduction systems. The holder of the Professorship will teach in both Faculties.
Reporting: The Deans and the Professor shall provide a written report on the progress and advancement of the Professor's work each year. The "Oticon Professorship in Acoustic Signal Processing" will be mentioned in all publications and public activities relating to the Professor's work.

Background:

The Oticon Foundation has made a lead gift to the National Centre for Audiology. In addition to funding for the Professorship, the gift will support graduate student scholarships and post-doctoral research.
