Recommended: That Senate advise the Board of Governors that it endorses the NCMRD expansion project as described.
Background:
The approved SuperBuild Program included an expansion of the Richard Ivey School of Business facilities to help accommodate expanding enrolment and the associated faculty and staff. The project involves construction of an additional floor on the NCMRD. As shown on the attached floor plan and rendering (Appendix 1) the project also includes the creation of an atrium space between the original Business School and the NCMRD to provide meeting space for students and a space to accommodate up to 300 people for meetings and presentations.
Funding for the project is to be provided from a major donation, SuperBuild funds, and a contribution from the Business School to cover interest costs until the full donation is received. It is planned to complete the design and call tenders for the project in March. Construction will be completed in the fall/winter of 2001.
The Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry is embarking on an expanded focus on Ecosystem Health within the medical curriculum. This is the next step in the Faculty's patient-centred learning curriculum that encourages students to focus on patients and their environment. This program also strengthens the Faculty's position as an innovator and leader among medical schools.
The goal of Ecosystem Health is to train physicians to consider a patient's physical, social, economic and political environment while assessing, diagnosing and treating illness. The Ecosystem Health concept purports that a wider view of health as an integrated discipline must become the foundation of medical practice if we are to achieve sustainable human health in the context of global sustainable development.
This approach examines what is happening to us as a society that contributes to a disease, why a particular patient has this disease and how it affects each unique patient. The Ecosystem Health approach also asks physicians to consider how others can be prevented from having the same disease.
While several other leading medical schools have introduced courses in Ecosystem Health, 澳门六合彩开奖预测 is the only university in the world to adopt the concept of Ecosystem Health for full integration into its medical curriculum. The program has assumed the administrative functions of the International Society of Ecosystem Health and is planning to host an international course in the spring of 2001.
a The Beryl Ivey Chair in Ecosystem Health
Recommended: That Senate approve and recommend to the Board of Governors, through the Vice-Chancellor, the establishment of The Beryl Ivey Chair in Ecosystem Health in perpetuity as detailed in Appendix 2, based on generous gifts for endowment from Dr. Beryl Ivey and The J.W. McConnell Family Foundation.
In addition to the gifts from Dr. Beryl Ivey and the McConnell Foundation, a bequest has also been established which, when realized, will bring the total endowment for the Chair to $2.5 million.
b. The J.W. McConnell Family Foundation Professor in Ecosystem Health
Recommended: That Senate approve and recommend to the Board of Governors, through the Vice-Chancellor, the establishment of The J.W. McConnell Family Foundation Professor in Ecosystem Health, as detailed in Appendix 3, for a five-year term based on an expendable gift from The J.W. McConnell Family Foundation.
c. The J.W. McConnell Family Foundation Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Ecosystem Health
Recommended: That Senate approve and recommend to the Board of Governors, through the Vice-Chancellor, the establishment of The J.W. McConnell Family Foundation Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Ecosystem Health, as detailed in Appendix 4, for a five-year term based on an expendable gift from The J.W. McConnell Family Foundation.
FOR INFORMATION
In the Fall 2000 ADF Small Grant competition, 45 applications were received from all constituencies on campus for consideration for funding. Approximately $80,000 was available for allocation, whereas the requests for funding amounted to $288,978. Of the 45 applications, 16 were approved for funding. Awards are shown on Appendix 5.
The Beryl Ivey Chair in Ecosystem Health
| Donor and Funding: | Dr. Ivey's gift for the Department of Medicine, Faculty
of Medicine & Dentistry is $1 million.
A further $500,000 from The J.W. McConnell Family Foundation's gift for Ecosystem Health will supplement Beryl Ivey's gift, bringing the total endowed fund to $1.5 million. This is done with the express permission of the McConnell Foundation. Foundation 澳门六合彩开奖预测 will hold the endowment. The amount available for spending each year will be in accordance with Foundation 澳门六合彩开奖预测's Investment Payout Policy as it relates to endowed funding, as may be amended from time to time. | Appointment: | An appointment to the Chair will be conducted in
accordance with the selection process outlined below
and the University's policies and procedures on
advertising and appointments. The holder of the Chair
will be a senior scientist, preferably with a Doctor of
Medicine, who is a recognized leader in the field of
Ecosystem Health. The Chair will be appointed to a
permanent academic position at the level of Professor
in the most appropriate department within the Faculty
of Medicine & Dentistry, depending upon qualifications.
Clinical appointment(s) to the London Hospitals will be
negotiated as required.
The Chair will be selected by an Advisory Committee led by the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry or the Dean's designate and two other members of the Faculty to be determined by the Dean or designate. If an external candidate is selected by the Advisory Committee, the Advisory Committee will forward the recommendation for initial appointment to the Appointments Committee of the relevant Department of the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry for review under the University's policies and procedures on appointments. |

The Chair will work to integrate the concept of Ecosystem Health fully into the medical curriculum and as a guiding principle for all training levels including practice and continuing education. The J.W. McConnell Family Foundation Professor in Ecosystem Health
| Donor and Funding: | The J.W. McConnell Family Foundation has made a
gift of $1.5 million to fund the Faculty of Medicine &
Dentistry's Ecosystem Health program. Of the gift,
$175,000 has been designated toward a Professorship
on a visiting basis, to be expended over a five-year
period, at the end of which time the Professorship will
terminate.
This is a half-year award only in each of the five years. Funding may be used to cover the travel, moving costs, and salary for the visiting Professor.
Under University policy, an amount equal to 5% of the total cash gift will be applied to support fundraising, donor management and stewardship costs. When the levy is taken into consideration, the amount available for spending is $166,250, or $33,250 per half-year award in each of five years. |

will be a visiting appointment for one term or less each
year at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor.
The holder of the Professorship will be selected by a committee led by the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry or the Dean's designate and two other members of the Faculty to be determined by the Dean or designate. If an external candidate is selected by the Advisory Committee, the Advisory Committee will forward the recommendation for initial appointment to the Appointments Committee of the relevant Department of the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry for review under the University's policies and procedures on appointments. |
| Criteria: | The role of the Professor will be to share expertise in an aspect of Ecosystem Health and help develop the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry's program in Ecosystem Health. The incumbent will engage in teaching through participation in established courses, contributing approximately 30 hours to undergraduate courses and 20 hours to faculty development. |
