FOR INFORMATION
On behalf of Senate the Provost approves the list of Candidates for Degrees upon the recommendation of the Registrar [S.96-124]. The list of Candidates approved by the Provost will be appended to the Official Minutes of the October 15, 1999, meeting of Senate.
Included in the resolutions approved by Senate in March 1997 to effect the July 1, 1997, merger of the Faculties of Dentistry and Medicine, was the following:
That insofar as Conditions of Appointment are concerned, the School of Dentistry shall be deemed to be a Department in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry and the Director of the School of Dentistry shall be deemed to be a Chair of a Department in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry. [S.97-98g]
In October 1997, Senate was advised of the interpretation of the Dean of Medicine & Dentistry concerning the promotion and tenure process and committee structure in the School of Dentistry resulting from the merger of the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Dentistry. Attached as Appendix 2 are the following letters:
R.Y. McMurtry to G. Moran, June 24, 1997 - explains that the P&T Committee in the School of Dentistry "will retain its structural composition as of June 30, 1997, except that the Director of the School will be Chair of the Committee". [The structural composition as of June 1997 was that of a faculty without departmental structure under B.9 of Conditions of Appointment.] *
G. Moran to R.Y. McMurtry, June 30, 1997, agreeing with the interpretation. *
G. Moran to C. Herbert, October 7, 1999 - explains the current situation and acknowledges that the School of Dentistry, based on its understanding of Senate's March 1997 resolution noted above, structured its P&T Committee as prescribed for Departments in section B.5 of Conditions of Appointment and suggests that it should continue to do so.
