Richard Hudler was born on June 17, 1942, in Rockford Illinois. He received his BA from Roosevelt University in 1965 and went on to do social work in Chicago for several years. He immigrated to Canada in 1971, lived in Toronto briefly, then moved to Goderich where he worked for 5 years as a counsellor for the Ontario ministry of Community and Social Services.After receiving his Master in Social Work in 1978 from Wilfred Laurier University, he returned to London Ontario where he pursued a career as a social worker, entering private practice in 1985.
Hudler joined HALO in 1976, becoming a member of the HALO Social Services Committee in 1978. In 1980 he joined HALO's Board, and became its president in 1981. He was also the editor of the HALO newsletter for many years, retiring from the presidency and the newsletter in 1990. As a result of his involvement with HALO, Richard emerged as an activist and advocate for gay and lesbian rights.
Richard Hudler participated in the founding meetings of the AIDS Committee of London, attending and speaking at numerous AIDS conferences, including the annual International Conference on AIDS. He was involved in consultation and advocacy for safer sex, proclamation of Gay Pride Week in London, Ontario and the subsequent lawsuit were also activities with which he was involved.
