Screened Shakespeare
Instructor: Professor M.J Kidnie
Summer 2022 Course, Full-Year Equivalent.
This full-year equivalent graduate course will engage with forms of Shakespeare on film. We will analyze the adaptive strategies of films designed for conventional cinema release before turning to the more recent phenomenon of “live” or “as live” films of live stagings. This course will explore issues of liveness and presence begged by remote simultaneous viewing, along with intermedial modes of audience interaction provided through, for example, live tweeting. We will focus especially on the NTLive series (not available for viewing, but which has generated a huge body of scholarly articles), and streamed offerings made available by the RSC and the Stratford Festival, wrapping up with an example of “lockdown Shakespeare” provided by Creation Theatre’s 2020 Tempest.
