ENGLISH 9117B ~ Circulation and the Form of the Neo-Slave Narrative
Professor Taiwo Adetunji Osinubi
Winter Half Course.Long considered a quintessentially African American genre, the neo-slave narrative, the historical novel of American chattel slavery, now circulates as a genre for representing cultural debris of circum-Atlantic slave plantation economies. In this seminar, we will examine the ways in which the neo-slave narrative has been retooled to address the interconnections of everyday living with histories of displacement and dispossession. We will read six novels from a mix of American, British and Caribbean writers. Our discussions will draw upon theoretical readings from Marxian and feminist vantage points as well emerging work from intimacy studies.
